Restoration of the facade of St. Peter's

Here the facade of St. Peter's, like that of many other churches and buildings around town, is partly covered by the scaffolding of restoration as Rome and the Catholic Church prepare for the Jubilee Year 2000. Sponsored by the Italian national electric company, the restoration of the facade of St. Peter's was completed in October of 1999.

From this vantage point, you can also see for yourself one of the primary complaints leveled against the church's facade, designed by Carlo Maderno at the start of the 17th Century. The imposing facade completely blocks the view of Michelangelo's dome as one approaches the building.
