Motor traffic is barred not just on the walkways of this town (how would anything with an engine and wheels get over the stairs on a typical bridge?) but also on many of the smaller canals due to the low overhead of the pedestrian bridges. So some vendors simply dock as far inland as they can get, away from the turbulence of the Grand Canal, and set up shop there on the water's edge.
