The perfect example of Romantic ruins. In the middle of the Tiber River is a stone archway, between 400 and 700 years old, all that remains of a bridge - the first stone bridge to be built over the river, almost 2,200 years ago, though it was repaired numerous times. When it (again) gave way in 1598 and the Senate and People of Rome had had enough of trying to repair it, they left its remains in the middle of the river, and left it to future generations to replace it with another bridge directly to the south.
